Sonia has worked most recently as an international news producer in Istanbul, Türkiye. Before that, she conducted research and reporting in Taipei Taiwan through a Fulbright fellowship, focusing on Taiwan/Hong Kong relations, and specifically Taiwanese youths’ opinions on the 2019 Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. Before moving abroad, Sonia worked as a Presidential Writer in the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence, where she drafted correspondence on behalf of the President of the United States. She is particularly interested in how national and international trends in democratic backsliding affect people’s day-to-day lives.

Sonia graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago, and will graduate in May with a Master’s in journalism from Columbia University. She speaks Spanish and some Mandarin Chinese (and Duolingo Turkish). For fun, she runs a pizza Instagram (@pizza_w0rld) providing in-depth pizza analyses from the places she has lived.
